Developing a 3-year Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Strategic Plan

CASE STUDY

IG IDEAS Strategist Sage Drennon and Director of Programs and Partnerships Desi Carson with next-gen leader Lore Espinoza supported B Lab by facilitating and developing a 3-year JEDI Strategic Plan from September 2021 - March 2022.

Background

B Lab is a nonprofit network transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet - with a vision of business as a force for good.

Challenge

B Lab had identified 3 pillars of their JEDI work, but lacked a strategic plan to bring those pillars of the work into alignment with future progress and growth for JEDI. They were looking for support developing a strategic plan.

In collaboration with The JEDI Strategic Planning Working Group, IG:

Hosted 10 strategic sessions for the group to determine: choosing a strategic framework to follow, determining how long the strategic plan should be for, root cause analysis of the three JEDI pillars of B Lab, a strategic screen, and a final report that included a timeline, implementation recommendations, key results, and measurements;

Formulated a complete 3-year JEDI strategic plan

Approach & Solutions

Outcome

As a result of this strategic plan, B Lab now has clear direction for how to embed JEDI into the ethos of their organization. The strategic plan offers initiatives and strategies along with key results to ensure that B Lab is able to track and measure their progress moving forward. This plan also created a central communication point for the JEDI work, inviting others to ask thought provoking and insightful questions about how their work overlaps with JEDI.

Testimonial from Ellonda Williams, Director of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion:

Working on Strategic Planning can be a scary, daunting task; a feat that is much easier said than done. Our group had varying levels of strategic acumen which made both where and how to start a task in itself. After B Lab made the decision to draft its inaugural JEDI Strategic Plan, I was elated to hear that IDEAS Generation had hired a Strategist. B Lab is full of well-meaning, zealous, committed, creative change-makers who often can bite off more than they can chew. IG’s ability to keep the group on task with a clear process was outstanding. The group often reported after meeting that we all felt "held" by the IDEAS team. They showed up on time, always prepared and kept the group on-task. The group's ability to synthesize in the moment was very helpful when the group hit barriers that we could not move past. The global exposure of the team, as well as their inclusive perspectives came together often to help the Planning Committee identify solutions rooted in equity, within our locus of control.  While the process got a bit rushed in the final weeks, the IDEAS team happily made shifts to accommodate our deferred timeline, all while navigating ramifications from the COVID-19 pandemic and team exposure. It was a great experience and we learned a myriad of things about ourselves as an organization and how to embed JEDI across a global movement.
